glass/wax series
2013-2015

While not drawing in the strict sense of the word, the works in this handmade paper section combine a drawing instinct with the physicality of sculpture. In the “glass/wax” series, I continue my explorations of translucency, in this case, also capitalizing on the transparency of the glass to be able to work from both sides of the piece. Placed on steel shelves, these pieces are objects in space, free of framing. This enables the image and materials to visually occupy spaces beyond the two-dimensional surface, and bring “drawing” out from the wall.

threads
2014-2016

In the “thread” series, the line of the thread is initally seen as a drawn line. On close examination, however, the dimension of the thread emerges from the paper it is embedded in yet is contained and merged with the fiber of the paper. The paper and thread are one. Embedding the threads give the translucent paper a physicality and weight. Hung free, suspended from a steel bracket, these works react to shifting air currents and light.

In this group of pieces, I have worked with the paper pulp in additional ways such as  embedding other materials, or manipulating the wet pulp, as well as sewing, folding and pining paper once dry.
